Standing proudly at 193 metres above sea level, Mount Louisa is the suburbs’ answer to Castle Hill and is renown for its quad-burning steps and sweeping views of Townsville Airport, Town Common and Magnetic Island. Its mixture of well-constructed walking tracks and network of original trails makes Mount Louisa the ideal location for an Outer Limits trail run… even if those rewarding views are a little hard to make out in the dark.
Made up of paved steps, wide gravel paths and flowy single track with plenty of challenging climbs and steep descents – The courses make for tough running during the day but present a whole new challenge at night. We strongly recommend good trail shoes to help you navigate the loose, rocky and more-rutted sections, as well as fun, reflective clothing (think: glowsticks, fluoro and hi-vis). A good headlight is MANDATORY. We also recommend that you download the course map onto you watch or phone… just in case.
We acknowledge the Wulgurukaba people of Gurambilbarra as the Traditional Owners of this land. We pay our respects to their cultures, their ancestors and their Elders, past, present and emerging.

Where:
Our Event HQ, the start line and the finish line will be located near the Sports Centre at Calvary Christian College – 569 Bayswater Road, Mount Louisa.
All runners are required to sign in and collect their bib number from Event HQ. Pins will be provided (or you can bring a race number belt). Please ensure you arrive on time to sign in and get ready to run. If you miss your start time, you may not be allowed to race. There will be a signed bag drop area at Event HQ where personal belongings can be left.
Getting there:
Calvary Christian College is located at 569 Bayswater Road, Mount Louisa. This is a 15 minute drive from Townsville City and is on the right-hand side of Bayswater Road as you head towards the Mount Louisa trail head. Please park in the large school carpark in an orderly fashion, being considerate of others. Once parked, walk towards the large blue gymnasium building (located on the trail side of the carpark, behind the Early Learning Centre).
Overview: Although runners will sign in, start and finish at our Event HQ at Calvary Christian College.
Please note that these courses are challenging, especially at night. If you are not an experienced trail runner and/or aren’t confident running trails at night, we strongly recommend opting for the 6km course.
Cut Off Times: The event director and event officials reserve the right to pull any competitor out of the race if they are concerned about their wellbeing. For the safety of participants and our volunteers, a cut off time applies to the 21km course. All 21km runners must have passed their turnaround point marker and left Event HQ for their second lap by 7.45pm. After this time, runners will be directed through the finish line. Any runners who are short coursed can opt to have their nominated distance changed to the 10km event – They will just need to report to the timing tent once they finish.
The Options:
6km – The Loop
Runners will leave Calvary and turn right, running alongside Bayswater Road. Cross over Raynesford Drive and follow the marshal directions to cross Bayswater Road and enter the park. Follow the winding footpath to Crestbook Drive and then continue along Crestbrook Drive for 500metres before turning left onto Afton Way. Follow Afton Way around to the right and then left, up the nasty incline which is guaranteed to warm up the legs – and now you’re on the trails. Follow the marked trail to join up with the ‘normal walking track’, where you’ll turn right. Enjoy some undulation before reaching the Outer Limits’ equivalent of the Furber stairs (You’re welcome). Once you reach the top, turn right and follow the wide trail for a speedy descent. Look out for the right hand turn which will send you back across the walking track and eventually into suburbia/Jett Lane. Turn right at the end of Jett Lane, run along Chapple Street and continue the way you came (Chapple Street turns into Crestbrook Drive), back along the dark footpath, over Bayswater Road and then it’s just a short sprint home to the finish.
You can see the route and download a copy of the GPX file here.

10km – The Level Up
The course follows the same route as the 6km until you reach the summit. That is: Turn right out of Calvary, running alongside Bayswater Road. Cross over Raynesford Drive and follow the marshal directions to cross Bayswater Road and enter the park. Follow the winding footpath to Crestbook Drive and then continue along Crestbrook Drive for 500metres before turning left onto Afton Way. Follow Afton Way around to the right and then left, up the nasty incline. Follow the marked trail to join up with the ‘normal walking track’, where you’ll turn right before taking on Outer Limits’ equivalent of the Furber stairs (You’re welcome). Once you reach the top, take the track down towards Greenview Estate on the Kirwan side. Follow the markings and turn right when you reach the concrete footpath. Follow the footpath around where it will spit you out onto Adrian Rise. Turn right, and right again at the end of the street, and take a left at our marshal to head back towards the Summit. You’ll then turn left and follow the wide trail all the way down to where it meets the Mount Louisa Trail Head. Take the normal walking track in and just before you reach the stairs, there’ll be a left hand turn to get you out of the trails and back into suburbia/Jett Lane. Turn right at the end of Jett Lane, run along Chapple Street and continue the way you came (Chapple Street turns into Crestbrook Drive) and back onto the dark footpath. Then you just have to carefully cross Bayswater Road and sprint home.
You can see the route and download a copy of the GPX file here.

21km – Double or Nothing
It’s the same as the 10km course but, as the name suggests, once the runners make it back after their first lap they’ll be met with a U-Turn sign and will then have the pleasure of running the loop again.
Some notes on the turnaround point: Runners can have a bag drop at the turnaround point that they can access before heading out on their second lap. While runners who do not reach the turnaround point by 7.45pm will be directed straight to the finish chute, runners who are ‘within time’ are also free to call it quits once they get to the turnaround point and elect for an early finish – They’ll just have to tell us (and the crowd) that they’re tapping out before continuing on to the finish.
You can see the route and download a copy of the GPX file here.

Please note that this event is not part of the Outer Limits Trail Run Series for 2025.

After this time, runners will be directed through the finish line and, if they wish, can have their registration changed to reflect that they completed the 10km course.
Mandatory Gear:
Please see below for the mandatory gear requirements. Mandatory gear must be carried for the duration of the run. Event officials reserve the right to refuse a participant to start the race if they do not comply with mandatory gear requirements. There will be mandatory gear checks at the sign in. We have marshals on the course and a safety vehicle with additional first aid.
- All distances must carry a charged head torch. We also strongly recommend that you download the course map/GPX file onto your phone or watch
Additional mandatory gear for 10km and 21km runners:
- 2x compression bandages
- a fully charged and waterproofed phone (there is limited service along the course) Please download the free EMERGENCY+ app on your phone prior to the event
- Whistle
- Space blanket (can be bought at any chemist)
- Sufficient water and nutrition for the duration of the run
Water & Nutrition: It is recommended that you take at least 500ml of water per hour that you expect to be running. Some water is provided on the course at aid stations, please use your own bottle. Ensure you take sufficient nutrition with you for the run. The 20km runners can utilise a bag drop at Event HQ. They will see this at their turnaround (~10km) point.
Facilities: There are toilets located at Event HQ. Please help us to take care of the School’s facilities as well as the Mount Louisa trails by ensuring no rubbish is left behind. The trails will be open to other users that may wish to use them.
Finish Line refreshments: Cold water and electrolytes (thanks to Pure Sports Nutrition) are provided at the finish line for competitors. Fresh seasonal fruit will also be available to all runners. We hope to have a number of food trucks on site selling food and drinks so keep an eye on our socials.
Safety: The trails include sections of challenging and remote single track, be sure to exercise caution on these sections. If you DO NOT FINISH the race (or if you have nominated for the 21km and elect not to do your second lap) you must see an event official or contact race HQ. If you do not report to an event official and a search party is sent out, this will be at the competitor’s cost.
Rules & Regulations: In order for the event to run as smoothly as possible we need all participants to cooperate and stick to our rules and regulations, please read through the points below:
- No rego, No run! – We do not offer registration on the day and most our events sell out in advance. Please check with us before coming to the event unregistered.
- Visible bib – Please make sure your bib number is clearly visible (front of shirt) when crossing the finish line, this ensures the correct detection of your timing chip by the electronic timing system. The bib can not be covered by clothes or bags, this might cause the timing chip to not be picked up by the antenna at the finish line.
- No shortcuts – please stick to the marked track, for safety and fairness reasons. All courses are clearly marked and we have marshals out on the course.
- Fitness level – please choose the right distance according to your fitness level! Many of our courses are a bit more technical and running on trail will take you approximately twice as long as running the same distance on road. Our trail run events are not designed to be walked, especially not the longer distances. If you have any questions in regards to choosing the right distance according to your ability, please feel free to contact us. The event officials reserve the right to short course or pull competitors out of the race if they are concerned for their well-being.
- Obey traffic regulations unless otherwise instructed by an event official
- Treat other competitors, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect and courtesy
- Dress Code – please wear appropriate clothing, including pants, shirts and suitable running shoes. Since the event is being run at night, we strongly recommend that runners wear reflective clothing for safety and to help with the fun vibe of the event, e.g. fluoro, hi-vis and glowsticks.
Trail Run Etiquette:
- Be mindful that the trails are open for other users outside of the race, including runners and walkers
- Do not leave any rubbish behind. What you bring in you must take out
- Keep left and give way to runners passing from behind
- Don’t approach any wildlife you may come across on the trails
- We ask you to NOT wear headphones, so you can hear other trail users around and hear the trail marshals’ instructions
- Stop and give assistance to other runners if needed. If another competitor falls and injures themselves, it is not an opportunity to pass them. Give assistance and ensure they are ok. Time considerations will always be given to the ones who stop and assist injured runners.
