The sixth and final event in the Outer Limits Trail Run Series will be somewhat different this year. Due to the ongoing road closures of the Paluma Range road we’ve moved the event to Hidden Valley, which has also lead to a change of event date to ensure favourable running weather. Hidden Valley has many hidden gems and no shortage of amazing trails. Some of you might be familiar with the Paluma Push mountain bike race that is held in Hidden Valley each year in July. We will be offering a similar style event with a social run on Saturday afternoon, camping at the cricket grounds (please book your spots), bon fire, food truck and a great time with your mates.
We acknowledge the Gugu Badhun people as the Traditional Owners of this land. We pay our respects to their cultures, their ancestors and their Elders, past and present – and all future generations.

Where: Race HQ, start and finish for all distances, is at the Hidden Valley Cricket Oval (Ted Furber Memorial Park)
Getting there: Hidden Valley is a 2.5 hour drive from Townsville via Hervey’s Range Road. Please arrive with enough time to spare before the start of your event to sign in and receive your race number. Please be careful driving along Laroona Road and Ewan Paluma Road as a large section is unfenced and within a cattle station so you may experience livestock on the road as well as the usual wildlife. There is approx. 20km of dirt road once you turn of the bitumen near Zig Zag Station. The road is in good condition, no 4WD is required, just take good care on the road and don’t rush.
If you are travelling from the north of Townsville, you will need to travel to Hidden Valley via Ingham and Mount Fox. It is around 1 hour and 40 minutes from Ingham to Hidden Valley. Once again, these roads are not travelled as frequently, so please drive with caution.
Parking: Please park in an orderly fashion at Event HQ and follow the parking marshals instructions on the day.
Cut Off Times: The event director and event officials reserve the right to pull any competitor out of the race if they are concerned about their well being. Runners may be short coursed or directed straight to the finish in the interests of athlete and volunteer safety, if they have not reached a certain point by a set time.
6km – The Short
This clockwise loop is perfect for those wanting a taste of the Valley! Head straight out of the gate, cross Running River bridge, and follow a dirt road through quintessential NQ cattle country. A historical mining track leads you down to the river which is where the adventure kicks in – There’s a river crossing, technical trail and thick vegetation to navigate before you pop out into a paddock with grazing cows. Then you’ve just got a few punchy climbs until the finish.

12km – The Middle
This L shaped ‘out and back’ course features an adventurous loop at the far end that is not for the faint hearted or weak ankled. Sam has described the first section, which will take you to the famed Survivor Hut, as: “ups, downs, cow poo, dry creek beds, ruts and more cow poo”. In typical Outer Limits style, the next 1.7kms is more of an adventure than a run as you descend a very steep (‘almost’) track to a dry creek bed. Enjoy an epic rock hop before reaching an ‘Amazing Race’ style detour – A choice between two options, each with their pros and cons. Your choices? Wet or dry. The dry option is a rocky scramble along a riverbed, while the wet requires a swim through the picturesque, crystal clear pools. Then take a *slightly* more defined track out of the gorge, back past the hut, along the farm track (and the ruts and the cow poo) and back towards the finish line.

20km – The Long
Wave goodbye to your loved ones as you board the bus to Mount Fox Road. The bus cuts off a couple of the less memorable kilometres that would’ve otherwise pushed the course beyond our traditional OL distance tax, aka the ‘good value for money’ excuse we often use when it comes to measuring distances. The driver will take you to the start line which is fittingly placed at the bottom of a big, long climb. And yes, the elevation starts straight from the gun. Follow the road up out of the Valley before turning left onto a paddock with something that looks close to a trail if you’re squinting. This ‘track’ makes for flat and easy running but it’s not very well defined so keep an eye on the markings! You’ll then take a left onto a bulldozed track with plenty of dust. Sam has offered time credits for anyone who correctly guesses the age of the dozer you’ll run past. Leave the dust behind for a gravel road and amazing views, before descending down a rocky, rutted road back into the Valley. The road pops out 500m from the finish line, but we’re not going that way. Turn right and follow the 12km course all the way to the finish.

Rules & Regulations: In order for the event to run as smoothly as possible we need all participants to cooperate and stick to our rules and regulations, please read through the points below:
- No rego, No run! – We do not offer registration on the day and most our events sell out in advance. Please check with us before coming to the event unregistered.
- Visible BIB number – Please make sure your bib number is clearly visible (front of shirt) when crossing the finish line, this ensures the correct detection of your timing chip by the electronic timing system. The bib can not be covered by clothes or bags, this might cause the timing chip to not be picked up by the antenna at the finish line.
- No shortcuts – please stick to the marked track, for safety and fairness reasons. All courses are clearly marked and we have marshals out on the course.
- Fitness level – please choose the right distance according to your fitness level! Many of our courses are a bit more technical and running on trail will take you approximately twice as long as running the same distance on road. Our trail run events are not designed to be walked, especially not the longer distances. If you have any questions in regards to choosing the right distance according to your ability, please feel free to contact us. The event officials reserve the right to short course or pull competitors out of the race if they are concerned for their well-being.
- Obey traffic regulations unless otherwise instructed by an event official
- Treat other competitors, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect and courtesy
- Dress Code – please wear appropriate clothing, including pants, shirts and suitable running shoes
Trail Run Etiquette:
- Be mindful that the trails are open for other users outside of the race, including runners and walkers
- Do not leave any rubbish behind. What you bring in you must take out
- Keep left and give way to runners passing from behind
- Don’t approach any wildlife you may come across on the trails
- We ask you to NOT wear headphones, so you can hear other trail users around and hear the trail marshals instructions
- Stop and give assistance to other runners if needed. If another competitor falls and injures themselves, it is not an opportunity to pass them. Give assistance and ensure they are ok. Time considerations will always be given to the ones who stop and assist injured runners.
Series Points System:
- You will receive points for each run you complete in your chosen distance, and your total score is the sum of all your attended (and finished) races in the same distance category.
- The winner of a race receives 100 points. Every other runner receives points based on their time compared to the winner’s time.
- For example, Sarah wins the race in 35:00. Sonja finished in 42:00. Sarah’s score is 100 because she won. Sonja’s score is 83.3. It is calculated by dividing the winner’s time (35 minutes) by her time (42 minutes) and then multiplying the results by 100. So 35/42 x 100 = 83.3
- Points are calculated separately for men and women. Men use the men’s winning time, and women use the women’s winning time to calculate points.
- You are counted as a Series participant if you complete at least FOUR of six races in the Series in the SAME distance (i.e. short, middle or long). If you choose a different distance for the other runs, these points will NOT count towards your total points.
- Your age group for the Series will be your age as at end of the year
- Awards are presented to the overall top three male and female runners (for each distance), as well as the first male and female runners in the following age groups: Juniors (under 12 & under 16 – in short distance only), 16-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+. Please note: Age for age group awards is calculated as AT END OF YEAR.
- The overall top three male and female runners are not eligible for age group awards.
- An end of Series celebration and Awards Presentation night will be held after the last event.
